Personal & Professional Development Activities
OxRSS periodically hosts wellbeing events to support research staff, including facilitator Roddy Bray’s ‘Being for Beginners’, which offers tools for greater self-awareness, understanding and practical change. These wellbeing series are posted in the OxRSS email.
These are moderated events focusing on how a particular theme or issue is seen at the intersection of diverse disciplines. The forums begin with short presentations by specialists in different fields, followed by an interactive discussion open to all participants. For examples of past events, see What We Have Done. Upcoming Interdisciplinary Forums will be posted in OxRSS emails.
Interested in meeting other researchers working on related problems or with shared methods, but who are perhaps in a different field? Participate in an informal group where members meet to discuss these issues, get feedback on their own work, or collaborate on something new. Some groups that we've run are listed below, and further information about getting involved is posted in the OxRSS emails. If you would like to suggest an IDG, please get in touch.
Participant engagement in qualitative research
Discussing methods, approaches, and considerations about care for participants and effectiveness in elicitation of beliefs, perceptions, or experiences of sensitive topics.
Network Analysis
We look at the application of network data structures in different fields (social networks, cognitive networks, ecological networks, etc.), and common challenges encountered in their analysis and interpretation.
Statistical Inference & Computing
We discuss all manner of topics in statistics, both theoretical and computational, and draw on our diversity of backgrounds to overcome myopia in the methods applied in our respective fields.
Anthropology & Psychology: Comparisons & Divergences
The aim is to bring anthropology into critical dialogue with psychology for a more holistic approach to human sciences research.
The notion of ‘presence’ in an interdisciplinary approach
We endeavour to find out how much overlapping exists when various disciplines speak about the notion of ‘presence’. For instance, what does a physicist have in mind? And a historian?
Leading Education with Legal Lens (LELL)
The aim is to explore the intersection between education and law in relation to educational leadership, school issues and advice to governments and policy-makers.
Meta-research, open science and research reproducibility
The reproducibility crisis has affected multiple research fields, and scientists are calling for a change in the research culture (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364661319302906). Meta-research was created to identify solutions to the current situation, and Open Science is one of the solutions to improve transparency of research. We plan to bring together researchers from any academic field to share their experience on meta-research, open science and reproducibility by hosting journal clubs, research-in-progress presentations, and invited talks.
We’ve hosted virtual writing boot camps on Zoom for researchers of any field wanting to get ahead on their writing. People have used these sessions to work on projects such as an article, book chapter, grant proposal, or scientific review. Sessions are organised for short, concentrated times, with the support of the group and host. If you’d like to host or participate in writing boot camps, please let us know!
We’ve hosted conversation meet-ups for people to practice languages with native speakers either online or in person. Popular language meet-ups have included French, Italian, Spanish and German. If you’d like to host or participate in a language group, please let us know!
